African players shine in Europe as World Cup play-offs approach

Manchester United's Cameroonian midfielder Bryan

Manchester United forward Bryan Mbeumo scored again at the weekend, opening the scoring in a 2–2 draw against Tottenham. The Cameroon star, now with four goals in four games, will turn his focus to the 2026 World Cup play-offs, where Cameroon face DR Congo on Thursday. A win puts them into a final against Gabon or Nigeria for a place in next year’s intercontinental play-offs.

England

Bryan Mbeumo (Man United): Scored his sixth goal of the season with a 32nd-minute header from Amad Diallo’s cross.

Idrissa Gueye (Everton): Scored in stoppage time to help Everton beat Fulham 2–0. He now has two goals this season.

Ibrahim Sangare (Nottingham Forest): Got his first goal for Forest in a 3–1 win over Leeds, helping the club earn their first league win since opening weekend.

Germany

Yan Diomande (RB Leipzig): The 18-year-old Ivorian scored for a third straight week, though Leipzig lost 3–1 to Hoffenheim.

France

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Marseille): Scored Marseille’s third goal in a 3–0 win over Brest, keeping them near the top of Ligue 1.

Mamadou Sangare (Lens): Scored and won a foul that led to a Monaco red card as Lens defeated Monaco 4–1 to move up to third.
