The second edition of the U-16 Mainland 3×3 Basketball Tournament took place on Saturday in Ikeja, featuring public and private secondary schools from Lagos Mainland.
Organised by Onaopepo Adu, Senior Special Assistant to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Sports Marketing and Administration, the event is part of a youth-development initiative that combines sports, digital innovation, and community talent grooming.
This year saw 16 school teams, up from 12 last year, with 64 basketball players and 8 student gamers. An eSports segment also allowed students to compete in an NBA video game contest.
Ilupeju Senior Grammar School won the boys’ final with a close 12–11 victory over Topfield College. In the girls’ category, Topfield dominated, defeating Dansol High School 22–2. Hosts Avi-Cenna International School took third place in both categories, and also won a tight eSports final, edging Wellspring College 59–57.
Adu said the tournament aims to provide more platforms for young athletes, noting that two MVPs from last year were invited to the NBA Junior Cup. He added that the inclusion of eSports is part of plans to expand the competition.
Damilare Orimoloye, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Sports, praised the mix of private and public schools, saying it encourages collaboration and development.
Players and coaches also appreciated the improved organisation and provision of kits. The first edition, held in December 2024, featured only Island schools.
