Former President Olusegun Obasanjo led a 15-minute walk around his residence at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Abeokuta, to highlight the importance of exercise in preventing and managing diabetes. The event marked this year’s World Diabetes Day on November 14.
Obasanjo, nearly 90 and managing diabetes for almost 40 years, was joined by medical personnel, security operatives, and NYSC members. He did not speak to journalists after the walk.
Dr. Olalekan Makinde of the Obasanjo Foundation said the walk demonstrated that regular exercise, even short brisk walks, is vital for healthy living. Endocrinologist Dr. Adedeji Otukoya and Ogun State Police Medical Officer Dr. Ihegboro Minachiso echoed the call for lifestyle changes, noting that sedentary habits and poor diets drive the rise in diabetes cases.
Obasanjo’s example shows that with proper care, diabetes can be managed without giving up an active life.
