Osimhen Closes In on Yekini’s Record as Iwobi, Simon Hit Major Milestones

Osimhen

Victor Osimhen moved closer to Rashidi Yekini’s all-time Super Eagles scoring record as Nigeria beat Gabon 4-1 in the 2026 World Cup playoffs on Thursday night.

Osimhen struck twice in extra time in Rabat, taking his national-team tally to 31 goals—just six behind Yekini’s long-standing record of 37. The Galatasaray striker came alive after regulation time ended 1-1, scoring in the 102nd and 110th minutes to seal the win.

At 26, Osimhen is widely tipped to surpass the legendary mark if he maintains his scoring form.

Alex Iwobi also reached a major milestone, earning his 90th cap to join John Obi Mikel in fourth place on Nigeria’s all-time appearance list. The Fulham midfielder, who switched allegiance from England in 2015, has featured in Nigeria’s key campaigns, including AFCON 2019 and the 2023 runners-up finish.

Moses Simon earned his 86th cap, drawing level with Nwankwo Kanu and Muda Lawal. The Paris FC winger, who debuted in 2015, has scored 10 international goals and was part of Nigeria’s AFCON 2023 silver-winning team.

Nigeria’s most-capped players remain Ahmed Musa (111), Vincent Enyeama (101), and Joseph Yobo (100).

The Super Eagles now face DR Congo in the CAF playoff final on Sunday, November 16. The winners will advance to a six-team intercontinental qualifier in Mexico in March 2026, which will determine the last two spots at the World Cup in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
