Breaking: Lt. Yarima Escapes Assassination Attempt in Abuja

Nigerian Navy officer Lt. A.M. Yarima, who recently clashed with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, reportedly survived an assassination attempt on Sunday evening in Abuja.

According to military sources, unidentified men dressed in black and driving two unmarked Hilux vans allegedly trailed Yarima from the NIPCO Filling Station off the Line Expressway to Gado Nasco Way. Sensing the surveillance, the officer executed a “strategic maneuver” and escaped. The incident occurred around 6:30 p.m.

The matter is now under investigation, with security officials saying details are being withheld to avoid compromising the probe.

The development follows last week’s viral confrontation between Lt. Yarima and Minister Wike over a disputed land site in Gaduwa District—a clash that sparked national debate and prompted the Presidency to halt the demolition at the location.

Military veterans across the country have condemned Wike’s verbal outburst during the altercation and warned against any disciplinary action against the officer. Abiodun Durowaiye-Herberts, spokesperson for the Coalition of Retired Veterans, said ex-service members would “occupy the office and residence of the FCT Minister” if Yarima is punished, insisting that soldiers owe allegiance to the nation, not public officials.

Minister of Defence Mohammad Badaru Abubakar has also assured that no military personnel acting within the law will be sanctioned. “We will always protect officers on lawful duty,” he said during a briefing for the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day.

Veterans had earlier vowed to mobilise and storm the FCT Ministry if any action was taken against Lt. Yarima.
