Burna Boy Faces Fan Backlash, Cancels US Tour Dates

Grammy-winning Afrobeats star Burna Boy is facing heavy criticism after a string of controversies, poor attendance, and cancelled shows during his No Sign of Weakness US tour.

The backlash began on November 12 at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado, where Burna Boy stopped his performance to call out a fan who appeared to be sleeping, ordering security to remove her. The fan, Chaltu Jateny, later said she was grieving the loss of her child’s father and had attended the concert hoping to feel better. Many online slammed Burna Boy’s actions as insensitive and arrogant.

The incident seemed to affect turnout. Videos from his Houston show on November 22 showed numerous empty seats, with another fan seen sleeping during the performance. Critics linked the poor turnout to Burna Boy’s previous comments, including a livestream where he said, “Did I tell you all to be my fans? I am only looking for fans who have money.”

As criticism grew, two shows scheduled for November 28 and December 1 were cancelled. Fans expressed disappointment, with some calling for accountability and a public apology.

Celebrities also weighed in. Eminem reacted to the Colorado incident, saying, “Yo, this is not cool.” American streamer Ryan Garcia added that Burna Boy’s attitude was driving fans away.

Across social media, Nigerians and international fans urged the singer to apologise. Some said he may be risking long-term damage to his image if he doesn’t make amends.

Others, however, argued that despite his flaws, Burna Boy remains a crucial figure in pushing Afrobeats to global audiences and should use this moment to rebuild trust with fans.
