The African Union (AU) has dismissed claims of genocide in northern Nigeria following U.S. President Donald Trump’s remarks that Christians were being slaughtered by jihadists.

Trump had recently alleged that radical Islamists were killing Christians “in very large numbers” and warned of possible U.S. military action if the Nigerian government failed to act.

However, AU Commission Chair, Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, told reporters in New York that “there is no genocide in northern Nigeria,” urging caution in making such statements.

Youssouf noted that Boko Haram’s victims are mostly Muslims, not Christians. He added that Nigeria’s conflicts affect both religious groups, with jihadist violence killing thousands and displacing millions since 2009.
