Gunmen on Thursday attacked the convoy of former Anambra State Governor, Chris Ngige, along the Nkpor–Nnobi Road in Idemili North Local Government Area. The former governor, however, was not in the convoy when the incident occurred.

According to Ngige’s former media aide, Sir Fred Chukwuelobe, the attackers, dressed in police and military uniforms, opened fire on the pilot vehicle. A police officer in the car was shot, and the assailants made away with his gun and uniform. A nearby shop owner who rushed out to see what was happening was also shot and is due for surgery, though doctors expect him to make a full recovery.

Eyewitnesses noted that no police officer was killed, and the injured personnel, including the escort leader, are responding well to treatment.

Spokesman for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident and said the command had launched a coordinated state-wide manhunt for the fleeing gunmen. He also revealed that a white Mercedes-Benz SUV earlier snatched by the criminals was recovered after a joint pursuit by tactical units, including the Rapid Response Squad, Special Anti-Cultism Squad and operatives from Awka.

Ikenga added that the recovered vehicle has been secured as investigations continue, assuring the public that further updates will be provided.
