NDPHC urges big power users to join direct electricity purchase scheme
The Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) has urged high-energy-consuming businesses to subscribe to its Eligible Customer Programme, which allows them to buy electricity directly from NDPHC and other generation companies.
In a statement on Sunday, the company said the programme—first launched in 2017 and updated in 2024—offers industrial and commercial customers a stable, reliable, and affordable power supply, with access to 6MW, 10MW, or 20MW depending on approval. Subscribers also enjoy flexible pricing, negotiated tariffs, and better supply reliability.
NDPHC said it is working to sell part of its over 2,000MW stranded capacity directly to bulk users to boost revenue and support industrial growth.
Managing Director/CEO Jennifer Adighije described the scheme as a key driver of Nigeria’s industrial competitiveness, noting that companies like Phoenix Steel Mills have already benefited from stable power and improved productivity.
She added that NDPHC is expanding the programme to more industrial clusters and exploring embedded and bilateral power solutions, especially where the national grid cannot evacuate power efficiently.
Adighije said relying only on the centralised market is no longer sustainable due to revenue shortfalls and liquidity issues. As a result, NDPHC is shifting towards bilateral power sales, targeting large and creditworthy customers with regulator-approved power purchase agreements, to strengthen its revenue and protect the company from market inefficiencies.
