New Qualification Format Cost Super Eagles World Cup Spot – Pinnick

Former Nigeria Football Federation President, Amaju Pinnick, says the Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup was partly due to the revised qualification format, insisting the team would have qualified under the 2018 structure.

Pinnick spoke on Monday at the Big Sport Dialogue in Ikoyi after being questioned by Abayomi Ogunjimi, President of the Authentic Nigeria Football and Allied Sports Supporters Club, on Nigeria’s repeated failure to reach the World Cup during and after his tenure.

He rejected claims that the 2022 World Cup miss reflected poor leadership, noting that Nigeria “did not lose and did not win” the crucial fixtures, and blamed a system change that differed from the 2018 format where Nigeria qualified with two games to spare despite being in a tough group.

Pinnick highlighted major achievements during his administration, recalling victories over Argentina and Poland and a strong showing against England. He also said he personally negotiated the design of the current national team jersey with Nike.

He added that his tenure secured unprecedented Nigerian representation in CAF and FIFA committees, with at least 25 Nigerians holding positions, including roles in FIFA’s ethics and media committees.

Pressed on whether these positions benefitted Nigeria, Pinnick said some achievements were not for public disclosure.
“Those who know, know,” he said.

Despite Nigeria’s absence from the 2026 World Cup, Pinnick said he remains committed to supporting the country in his role as vice president of the tournament’s organising committee.

He urged Nigerians to focus more on progress than criticism, saying constant negativity hinders development.
