Ronaldo sent off as Ireland stun Portugal in World Cup qualifier

Cristiano Ronaldo was sent off for elbowing Dara O’Shea as Portugal fell 2-0 to Ireland on Thursday, missing another chance to seal qualification for the 2026 World Cup.

Troy Parrott struck twice in the first half to give Ireland a famous Group F victory and keep their qualification hopes alive. Portugal, however, remain top of the group on 10 points, two ahead of Hungary and three above Ireland, with one match left on Sunday. The group winner qualifies automatically, while second place heads to the play-offs.

Parrott, overwhelmed after his brace, said it was “the best night” of his life.

Portugal dominated early possession but Ireland struck first when Parrott headed in after 17 minutes. The AZ Alkmaar forward doubled the lead just before halftime with a low finish past Diogo Costa.

Ireland defended deep after the break and gained an extra boost when Ronaldo, frustrated, was shown a red card following a VAR review for elbowing O’Shea. It was the 40-year-old’s 13th career red card but his first for Portugal.

Ronaldo, who missed a penalty against Ireland in October, could miss the start of the World Cup if Portugal qualify, depending on his suspension.

He sarcastically applauded the home crowd as he left the pitch and exchanged words with Ireland coach Heimir Hallgrimsson before eventually shaking hands.
