Tinubu Postpones South Africa, Angola Trips Over Kebbi, Kwara Attacks

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu has postponed his planned trip to South Africa for the G20 Leaders’ Summit as he awaits security briefings on the abduction of Kebbi schoolgirls and the attack on worshippers in Eruku, Kwara State.

According to a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu also ordered the deployment of additional security personnel to Eruku and the entire Ekiti Local Government Area, directing the police to track down the attackers. The move followed a request from the Kwara State governor.

Presidency sources said Tinubu wants first-hand security updates from Vice President Kashim Shettima—who visited Kebbi on his behalf—and from the police and DSS before embarking on the trip. He was originally scheduled to leave Abuja today for the G20 Summit in South Africa and later attend the AU–EU Summit in Angola.

Tinubu condemned the attacks, expressing sadness over the abduction of 25 students from Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga, in Kebbi, despite earlier intelligence warnings. The bandits also killed the school’s Vice Principal, Hassan Makuku, who reportedly tried to protect the students.

The President reaffirmed his directive to security agencies to do everything possible to rescue the abducted girls and ensure their safe return. He also commiserated with the military over the death of soldiers and Brigadier General Musa Uba, who were killed in recent anti-insurgency operations in Borno State.
