Defence Minister Mohammed Badaru says the ministry is investigating the clash between FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and a naval officer, A.M. Yerima, over a disputed land in Abuja.

Speaking at a briefing ahead of the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day, Badaru said the Armed Forces would always protect officers carrying out lawful duties.

“We are looking into this issue, and any officer on lawful duty will be protected,” he said.

The incident reportedly occurred when Wike accused the military of taking over land allegedly belonging to former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Zubairu Gambo (retd.).

Badaru also unveiled new defence initiatives, including the Reclaiming the Ungoverned Space for Economic Benefits Programme (RUSEB-P) to engage retired veterans in local security, and the “Thank A Soldier” QR Code for citizens to send appreciation messages to troops.

He said troops under President Bola Tinubu’s administration have neutralised over 13,000 terrorists, arrested 17,000 suspects, and rescued nearly 10,000 hostages.

Badaru urged Nigerians to continue honouring the nation’s military heroes.
